Privacy policy and terms of use
“Skanok” app · last updated 4 October 2026 · terms version 3 · Versión en español (the Spanish version prevails in case of doubt)
Terms of use (what you accept when you open Skanok)
The first time you open the app you accept these terms with one tap. The date and version you accepted are stored on your phone; if they change, you are asked again.
- Skanok is informative: it gathers, organises and translates. It scans the barcode or reads the label of food, drinks, cosmetics, toothpastes, supplements and medicines, and shows what public sources already publish: the label on the pack, Open Food Facts and Open Beauty Facts, the official summaries of product characteristics of the Spanish medicines agency (AEMPS, CIMA), AESAN, EFSA, EU regulations and the guidelines and studies it cites in each case. It puts them into plain words and compares them with what you have marked. It creates no data of its own about any product.
- No agreements with anyone. Skanok has not signed and does not sign agreements with manufacturers, brands, supermarkets, laboratories, pharmacies, advertisers or any other company or body. Nobody pays to appear in Skanok or for how they appear, and Skanok earns no commission on any sale. The sources it uses are public and cited with their licence; using them does not mean that any of them endorses Skanok.
- It is not a medical service or a medical device. The people behind Skanok never act as doctors, pharmacists, dentists, dietitians or religious authorities. Skanok does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease; it does not prescribe, recommend or advise against any medicine, supplement or treatment, and it gives no doses. Its warnings say what a product contains according to its label or official leaflet and whether that matches what you have marked; they are not medical advice and do not replace a professional's.
- The package, your doctor and your pharmacist come first. Source data may contain errors or be out of date. If in doubt, check the product label and ask a professional. Never stop or change a treatment because of what Skanok says.
- Religious indications cite their sources (Sunnah and Quran; Shulchan Aruch and Leviticus) and do not replace the opinion of your imam or rabbi.
- No guarantee of completeness. Skanok warns about what it finds; the absence of a warning does not guarantee that a product does not contain something.
- Age. Skanok is intended for people aged 14 and over, the age from which a person can consent to data processing in Spain (Article 7 of Organic Law 3/2018). Data about a child or a baby is entered by their parent or guardian.
- Use. Personal use only. You may not copy the app or its database to sell them, or use them to mislead anyone. Third-party data keeps its own licence (see the database and its licences).
- Intellectual property. The name, design, texts and software of Skanok belong to its author. The open-source libraries it uses have their own licences (licences).
- Manufacturers and errors. Skanok does not judge brands: it states what the label declares and which public criterion applies, with its source. If a product's data is wrong, it is corrected at its source (Open Food Facts or AEMPS) and Skanok picks it up in its next version. Manufacturers and users can tell us at the contact address; we reply and, if there is an error, we correct it.
- Changes. If these terms change, the app asks you to accept them again before continuing.
- Governing law. These terms are governed by Spanish law. If you are a consumer, you may bring a claim before the courts of your place of residence and the consumer services of your region.
- These terms do not limit your statutory rights as a consumer.
Who is responsible
Controller: Ali Talaint. Contact: alitalaint12@gmail.com. Full identification details are provided on written request to that address and to any competent authority that requires them.
Skanok is free, has no ads and no purchases. If it ever had them, the controller's address and tax number would appear here, as required by Article 10 of Spanish Law 34/2002 (LSSI), together with the purchase terms and your right of withdrawal.

Special categories of data
Allergies, intolerances, medical conditions and the “Quit smoking” log are health data, and some food preferences may reveal beliefs. Article 9 of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR) treats them as special categories. The app therefore asks for your explicit consent (Article 9(2)(a)), separate from any other acceptance, before storing anything; “Quit smoking” has its own separate consent and its own delete button. You can withdraw consent at any time from Profile › What you avoid › Delete my exclusions; your exclusions are deleted immediately.
The optional Open Food Facts lookup
When a product is not in the database bundled with the app, you can ask it to look it up on Open Food Facts. It is off by default; you switch it on with the Search online toggle on the scan screen. Only the barcode is sent, over HTTPS: never your allergies, history, prices or any identifier. A barcode identifies a product, not a person. Open Food Facts is a non-profit based in France, inside the EU, so there is no international transfer. If the barcode belongs to a toothpaste, mouthwash or other cosmetic, Open Food Facts replies that it lives in its sister database, Open Beauty Facts, run by the same project, and Skanok asks it the same way: only the barcode is sent.
Who else sees your data
Nobody. With the lookup off, nothing is sent. Barcode and text recognition run on the device
(ML Kit on Android, with its usage statistics to Google switched off; Apple's Vision framework on
iPhone). Android cloud backup is disabled (android:allowBackup="false") and on
iPhone your data is excluded from iCloud backup.
No cookies, no ads, no tracking
The app uses no cookies, advertising identifiers, analytics or third-party tracking kits, and shows no ads. On iPhone it will not ask for tracking permission because it tracks no one. This website uses no cookies or analytics and loads nothing from other sites. It is hosted on GitHub Pages (GitHub, Inc.), which logs visitors' IP addresses for security, as stated in its privacy statement.
Skanok Premium and payments
Skanok can be used for free. Skanok Premium is an optional subscription, monthly or annual, with no trial period: you pay when you subscribe. It is bought, paid, renewed and cancelled through Google Play or the App Store, under their terms. Skanok never receives or stores your payment details: the store only tells the phone whether the subscription is active. You can cancel at any time from inside the app ("Manage or cancel subscription") or from your store account; it stops renewing at the end of the paid period.
App stores
When you download Skanok, Google Play or the App Store process your account and download data as independent controllers under their own policies. Skanok receives no data about you from them.
Medicines and supplements
If you scan a medicine box, the app looks it up in the list of medicines marketed in Spain published by the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (CIMA), which is bundled inside the app: the lookup never leaves the phone. It says whether it contains alcohol or anything of animal origin, whether it contains something you avoid and, if you enabled it, what your religion says, with its citation. It does the same for supplements from their ingredient list. This is information, not medical advice. Do not stop or change a treatment without talking to your doctor or pharmacist. Source: AEMPS, www.aemps.gob.es; for medicines authorised across the EU, the European Medicines Agency, www.ema.europa.eu.
Baby on board, recipes and nutrition
Baby criteria come from published bodies, always cited: the WHO Europe nutrient profile model for foods for infants aged 6–36 months (2022), the WHO recommendation of exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months and the AESAN Scientific Committee report on infant botulism. Skanok recommends no product on its own and does not replace your paediatrician. Recipes are original or from Wikibooks (CC BY-SA 3.0); nutrition values are calculated from USDA FoodData Central (public domain) and claims use the thresholds of Regulation (EC) 1924/2006. No decision about allergens, diets or religious restrictions comes from an artificial-intelligence model.
Permissions
Camera: only for scanning, requested when first needed; if you refuse, the app still works and you can search products and medicines by name in Search. Photos: no gallery permission; the system photo picker hands over only the photo you tap. Internet: only for the optional Open Food Facts lookup (and Open Beauty Facts, for cosmetics). No location, contacts, microphone or notifications.
Retention and your rights
Your data stays until you delete it or uninstall the app; More › Legal › Your data has a button that erases everything at once. Because the data is only on your device and the developer has no access to it, you exercise access, rectification and erasure yourself in the app. You can still write to the contact address, and you may lodge a complaint with the Spanish Data Protection Agency (aepd.es) or your local supervisory authority.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 14 and asks for no identifying data. Data about a child or baby is entered by the parent or guardian, stays on the phone and can be deleted at any time.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date above changes with it. If the change affects the health data you consented to, you are asked again inside the app.
